Cold World, Warm Heart

 By Rha Hira Arayal

i can’t expect

love to grow

on the walls of a home

that’s shuddering

from the cold,

that’s less bricks

and more mould,

that’s on the market

to be sold-

a home

too temporary

and weak

a home where

the roof leaks,

windows creak

and the door

is closed.

no one can

love me

when i

should be

more-

functional and friendly.

i shouldn’t

rely on solitude to defend me.

i shouldn’t

rely on injustice to mend me.

so i’ll close the

rotting windows gently-

for they are incapable of

protecting me from the storm

of “I SHOULD BE MORE”

the home that i need

is inside me-

i have a heart that’s warm.
