The Song of the Street Lamp

by Göksel Murat Eriş

I, a street lamp,

It’s me that enlights the night

With a light so bright

Also with a buzzing chant

I light the streets all night

When the sun goes down from the West

And after watching many a gulls caress

Towards the sun and to the seas,

Before all the childeren go home to their mothers

Some of them with happy scars on their knees

Life emerges to me.

And thus, begins my duty

Believe me,

I encounter many of you during the night;

Once a drunken man fell besides me

He held me and I helped him with my light

Once two lovers kissed beside me

And later I also witness their first fight

Being glad,

Here, I stand as lonely as I can be

Into the night and into this blind street

I sing the song of the light

I exist, only untill the daylight

And I’ll wait untill the next time

Where again I’ll enlighten the night

To the one who can hug the street lamp
