Soft Nights

 By Faith Pittet

In winter

whenever the city goes to sleep and I can’t

i sit by the south window edge and listen to

the sounds produced in the night

the gentle babble of the fountain right outside

our apartment

the barely audible peal of the church bell

announcing the new hour.

the catfight between the alphas of the neighbourhood

all distinct and pleasant in the dead silence of the night.

summer

I sit by the north window and listen to

the chiming cowbells reverberating through the night.

sometimes on a rainy night, I listen to soft pitter-patter

of the rain, steadily drumming on the leaves

slowly luring me to sleep.
